Discovering the Enchantment of Southport, N.C.

One of our favorite discoveries on our adventures through Coastal North Carolina is the enchanting town of Southport. We were immediately charmed by the fishing town and find ourselves returning often to enjoy its scenic beauty, rich history, laid-back vibe, and incredible restaurants.

The main attraction in Southport is its stunning waterfront. The town’s picturesque harbor offers breathtaking views of boats gently coasting through the water, colorful sunsets painting the sky, and seagulls and pelicans soaring overhead. Strolling along the waterfront, relaxing on a swing, sipping a cocktail at one of the “private” members-only clubs, or scoring a water view table at one of the restaurants, visitors can immerse themselves in the peaceful atmosphere while watching sailboats glide by, imagining themselves captaining a shrimp boat, and marveling at the beauty of the surrounding maritime scenery.

Aside from its natural beauty, Southport is also known for its historic charm. The downtown area is lined with beautifully preserved 19th-century buildings, giving the town a unique and timeless appeal. Many of the homes along the shaded streets of Southport proudly display historic name plaques and feature white picket fences covered in vibrantly colored flowers. The oak-lined streets and quaint shops add to the overall magic of the town, creating a perfect backdrop for leisurely walks and exploration. At Southport Trading Co, Duck Duck Goose, Bull Frog Corner, Cattail Cottage, The Christmas House, Southport Market, and Ocean Outfitters, you are sure to find perfect coastal treasures!

Because of its idyllic surroundings, Southport was a film location for several movies, including I Know What You Did Last Summer, Weekend at Bernie’s, and Safe Haven. After a visit or two to Southport, it’s easy to understand why one would choose this scenic location to film, and it’s fun to recognize our favorite spots around town in those movies.

When it comes to dining, Southport is a food lover’s paradise. The town is home to a diverse array of restaurants, ranging from coffee shops to cozy cafes to waterfront seafood bistros. Whether you’re craving fresh seafood, Southern comfort food, or international cuisine, you’re sure to find a dining spot that satisfies. We have savored lunch, dinner, cocktails, and coffee/tea at many of Southport’s venues such as Oliver’s on the Cape Fear, Provision Company, Edgewater 122, Fishy Fishy Cafe, Moore Street Oyster Bar, Southport Coffee Co & Kitchen, and Rusty Hooks Dockside Grille. Our bucket list restaurants include Mr. P’s Bistro, The Saucy Southerner, and Fizzy Janes.

To truly experience the essence of Southport, visit during one of its numerous festivals or town events. We were fortunate to attend the Annual Southport Wooden Boat Show and the Southport Christmas Flotilla, which showcased the town’s vibrant spirit and community involvement. We were also pleasantly surprised when we visited Southport one day and experienced the excitement of the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament. As we lounged in our high Adirondack chairs in our favorite spot at American Fish Company (soaking up the Southport sun and sipping painkillers), we cheered with the crowd as passing fishermen lifted their catches with pride. The energy and enjoyment of that day were truly unforgettable. Definitely one of the highlights of our times in Southport!

Southport, North Carolina, is truly a magical town that combines natural beauty, historical charm, maritime adventures, and culinary delights. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, history buff, or simply looking to relax and enjoy the coastal ambiance, Southport has something to offer everyone. Plan a visit to this enchanting town and discover its many treasures for yourself. You’ll come back just as we continue to do time and time again!
